A nanotech sensor that turns molecular fingerprints into bar codes

A new system can detect and analyze molecules without the need for an infrared spectrometer. The system uses nanostructured metapixels to detect and then translate molecules’ unique signatures into bar codes. The technology can be integrated into a compact sensor chip. It opens the door to large-scale image-based detection of materials using machine-learning technology.

Elon Musk calls ‘BS’, but new nanosensors may help find life on distant planets – CNET

Elon Musk recently tweeted that nanotechnology is “100% synonymous with bs”, but try and tell that to researchers at The Australian National University . A paper published in Advanced Materials on June 4 details new optical nanosensors, 50 times thinner than a human hair — enabling them to be incorporated into wearables that could one day help doctors detect and manage chronic disease.
